The Coordination Council will hold an open hearing on the death penalty today.
World Day Against the Death Penalty is observed on October 10. The Coordination Council’s event is timed to coincide with the occasion.
“The hearings, organized at the initiative of Mikita Semianenka from the ‘Latushka Coalition and For Freedom Movement’ faction, will allow the Coordination Council to join the discussion in a timely manner, make the Belarusian case more visible and formulate its own position based on professional expertise,” the Coordination Council said.
The hearings will feature Andrei Paluda, coordinator of the “Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus” campaign, as well as Viasna human rights defender Valiantsin Stefanovich.
Following the hearings, the Coordination Council will vote on the resolution “On the Unconditional and Immediate Abolition of the Death Penalty in Belarus,” a draft of which was proposed by the “Latushka Coalition and For Freedom Movement.”
