The Coordination Council decided at a general session to establish a Commission to Investigate the Crimes of Lukashenka’s Regime.
The commission was initiated by the Latushka Coalition and For Freedom Movement faction, the “Stop Being Afraid!” faction, the “Belarusians of Action” Bloc of Belarusian Political Prisoners, and the “Volya” movement.
The commission will be headed by Aliaksandr Rakitski, with Mikhail Kirylyuk as his deputy.
“The commission will collect, record and preserve evidence, document facts of crimes and their circumstances, and prepare materials and recommendations for future transitional justice mechanisms,” the Coordination Council explained.
The commission will operate on the principles of law, independence, impartiality and objectivity, it said. It emphasized that the commission is not a court and does not make decisions on guilt. A competent court should provide the final assessment of the evidence.
