The Working Group of the Belarusian Coordination Council on cooperation with Ukraine held a meeting with representatives of the Verkhovna Rada’s inter-factional parliamentary group “For a Democratic Belarus.”
The Ukrainian side was represented by members of parliament Vadym Halaichuk, Ihor Guz and Nikita Poturaiev. The meeting was also attended by Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Yaroslav Chornohor, who is responsible for engagement with Belarusian democratic forces.
The Coordination Council was represented in the talks by Dzmitry Shchyhelsky, Yuras Ziankovich, Vadzim Kabanchuk, Volha Zazulinskaya, Mikita Semianenka, Pavel Maryeuski and CC Speaker Artsiom Brukhan.
The main topic of the meeting was the establishment of a permanent format for cooperation between the Coordination Council’s Working Group and the Verkhovna Rada’s inter-factional group. The sides discussed regular contacts, coordination of positions and implementation of joint initiatives.
Particular attention was paid to cooperation at international parliamentary platforms, including the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. The participants also discussed Verkhovna Rada legislative initiatives related to Belarus and possible areas for further Belarusian-Ukrainian political cooperation.
The Coordination Council said that developing direct ties with the Verkhovna Rada is viewed as one of the mechanisms for strengthening the international standing of Belarusian democratic forces and the partnership between Belarus and Ukraine.
