Belarus’ Ministry of Communications and Informatization plans to increase the data cap on mobile tariff plans as the mobile network’s capacity expands, First Deputy Communications Minister Pavel Tkach said on Belarusian television.
At the beginning of this year, Belarus introduced restrictions on so-called unlimited tariff plans. Subscribers can now use only 30 GB of data per month at maximum speed. Once the limit is exceeded, internet speeds are reduced to 1 Mbps.
“We do plan to amend this resolution as the network’s capacity continues to increase, and the data consumption limit will be raised,” Tkach said.
He also reiterated the reasons for introducing the restrictions.
“The main reason, as my colleagues have said, is that we are experiencing an enormous imbalance in network load, especially in the evening when people actively start using social media or, let’s say, use mobile communications in ways they were not really intended for.
Because there have been cases where a person buys a single SIM card and starts sharing the internet connection with all five family members and three large televisions. It is obvious that this affects other internet users. We did not originally design mobile networks for streaming content simultaneously on three devices,” he said.
Tkach also argued that there is no such thing as “truly unlimited” mobile data anywhere in the world. According to him, such tariff plans in South Korea are limited to speeds of 400 Kbps, while the most popular plan in China includes 40 GB of data.
