Catholic priest Anatol Parakhnevich, the parish priest in Alkovichi, Vileyka District, has been sentenced to three years in prison. He was also fined a substantial amount. The sentence was handed down by the Vileyka District Court, Katolik.life reports, citing believers.
The priest was detained in March 2026. He was held in the KGB detention centre for several months. While in custody, Parakhnevich suffered a heart attack. He was recognised as a political prisoner.
The initial charges against Parakhnevich included treason. However, the sentence was ultimately handed down under articles relating to “insulting the authorities” and “extremism”.
