Brest customs officers stopped an attempt to import a SEAT Alhambra into Belarus as a vehicle already registered in the Eurasian Economic Union. The driver was thereby seeking to avoid paying customs duties, the Customs Committee’s press service said.
A 47-year-old Belarusian citizen brought the car through the Brest checkpoint. For inspection, he presented the vehicle registration certificate, but the information in it did not correspond to the vehicle’s actual markings.
During the inspection, customs officers noticed a metal plate with a VIN number under the hood. It had been attached in a non-factory manner. An examination found that the marking had been altered. Part of the body panel bearing the original identification markings had been removed and replaced with a homemade section.
The vehicle, with an estimated value of more than 30,000 rubles, was seized pending a court decision.
Brest Customs launched administrative proceedings under Part 2 of Article 15.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. The article provides for a fine of up to 30 base units, with possible confiscation of the vehicle.
A further investigation is also being conducted into signs of a crime under Article 381 of the Criminal Code of Belarus concerning the forgery or destruction of a vehicle identification number or registration plates.
