Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys has denied reports that the United States is pressuring Lithuania to resume the transit of Belarusian potash. He made the statement in an interview with Žinių radijas on November 5, Delfi reports.
“I can assure you and state with full responsibility that nothing of the sort is happening at present. (…) I can say that this is absolutely untrue,” Budrys said, commenting on an article in Politico. The publication reported that US special envoy John Coale had asked Lithuanian diplomats about the possibility of easing restrictions on the transit of Belarusian goods.
Budrys noted that sanctions against Belarus had indeed been discussed with Coale, but fertilisers were not mentioned.
The Lithuanian foreign minister added that he was disappointed by the publication of the report.
Earlier, Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius also denied reports of pressure published by Politico.
“No one is actually putting pressure on us. I have not felt any pressure from our strategic partners, the United States,” he said.
