BELPOL Discusses Migration Crisis And Sanctions Evasion In Latvia

Representatives of BELPOL visited Latvia on a working visit and held a briefing at the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. One of the topics discussed at the meeting was the migration crisis on the Belarusian-Latvian border.

As the organization’s press service reported, the sides discussed attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus and the use of the migration crisis by the Belarusian authorities to pressure EU countries.

The meeting also focused on security and further information sharing. The participants discussed the possibility of BELPOL regularly providing expert and analytical materials on the activities of the Belarusian authorities, regional threats and mechanisms for circumventing sanctions.

The participants also discussed sanctions policy. In particular, they discussed information sharing to assess the effectiveness of existing restrictions, identify schemes for circumventing them and prepare proposals for tightening them.

As part of the visit, BELPOL representatives took part in The Riga Conference 2026, which addressed security, foreign policy and strategic challenges facing the Baltic states and Europe.
