Belarusian Supreme Court Finds Deceased Buhlai Guilty of Genocide

The Supreme Court of Belarus has issued another verdict in a genocide case. Aliaksandr Buhlai has been found guilty of genocide against the Belarusian people. As in previous cases of this kind, the verdict was issued without imposing a sentence.

“Until May 1944, Buhlai headed the so-called Buglai Combat Volunteer Battalion and, being Belarusian himself, systematically exterminated his own people. More than 33 episodes of Buhlai’s criminal activities have been established, including the deliberate killing of at least 174 people, among them at least 27 children and elderly people known to be vulnerable, as well as the destruction of villages in the Homiel, Mahiliou and Minsk regions,” the Supreme Court’s press service said in a statement.

Buglai died in 1990.

This is the eighth such case considered by the Supreme Court. Previous verdicts were issued against deceased individuals Uladzimir Katriuk, Kanstantsin Smouski, Syamon Serafimovich, Osip Vinnitski, Aliaksandr Yarmolchyk, Hans Sieglingand Antanas Geciavicius.
