Belarus continues an exercise with troops of the Western Operational Command. As part of the maneuvers, the military practiced building a crossing over the Neman River, the Defense Ministry reported.
“According to the exercise scenario, a reconnaissance and sabotage group of a simulated enemy established a foothold on the opposite bank, mined the shoreline and attempted to disrupt the advance of the troops. A brigade UAV crew conducted reconnaissance and identified their positions and obstacles. After a landing party disembarked from a boat, a firefight broke out, resulting in the enemy being neutralized,” the Defense Ministry’s press service said, describing the scenario for the episode.
Servicemen of the 557th Engineer Brigade ultimately completed the task. Sappers cleared the bank of mines, divers checked the riverbed, and pontoon units set up a ferry crossing and ensured the transfer of equipment and personnel.
The Defense Ministry noted that the Neman is 115 meters wide at this section, with a current speed of up to 0.7 meters per second and a depth of up to three meters. The crossing can transport loads weighing up to 100 tonnes.
