Belarusian Man Detained With Homemade Drone Near Lithuanian Border

Lida border guards detained a Belarusian citizen carrying a homemade drone near the border with Lithuania. According to the State Border Committee, the incident occurred on October 1 following information received from local residents.

An Audi car, a homemade unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a remote control and seven batteries were found at the scene. All items were seized for examination.

Administrative proceedings have been initiated against the man for violating the border regime. His actions are also suspected of showing “signs of violations of airspace use regulations” and “illegal activities involving civilian drones.” He could face a fine of up to 100 base units, with confiscation of the drone.

Under a decree issued by Lukashenka on September 25, 2023, individuals in Belarus are prohibited from importing, storing, operating, circulating or manufacturing civilian drones and model aircraft. Violations are punishable by a fine of up to 30 base units, with mandatory confiscation of the aircraft and its components. Repeat violations within a year may result in criminal liability.
