Belarus maintains the operational readiness of a power transmission line running to Ukraine. Although it is not currently in use, it can be energised at any time. Siarhei Adamenka, Belarus’s deputy energy minister, told CTV.
“In March 2022, the Mazyr–Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant transmission line was energised for approximately one month. After that, it was disconnected. It is currently disconnected, but the necessary technical maintenance continues on the Belarusian side. Scheduled maintenance work is being carried out, and the line remains operational. If necessary, it can be energised at any time. As for coordinating its activation, such facilities are, of course, brought online by mutual agreement between both sides, provided that the relevant measures have been agreed and there is the technical capability”, he said.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, including from Belarusian territory. Before that, Ukraine periodically purchased Belarusian electricity. As a result, the Ukrainian side was forced to accelerate work to synchronise its electricity grid with the European one. In mid-March 2022, the electricity grids of Ukraine and Moldova were synchronised with the European Union’s networks.
