Belarusian Ambassador to Turkey and Iraq concurrently Anatol Hlaz paid a working visit to Baghdad on September 1–3.
On September 1, Hlaz presented copies of his credentials to Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. The sides discussed the restoration of Belarusian-Iraqi cooperation, as well as bilateral and regional issues. Hlaz conveyed an invitation to Hussein to attend the 4th Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security on November 3–4.
The sides also discussed resuming the work of the Belarusian-Iraqi Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation, holding inter-ministerial consultations, and completing the approval process for a number of draft intergovernmental agreements.
“Particular attention was paid to the trade and economic dimension of bilateral cooperation, including logistics, prospects for supplying Belarusian pharmaceutical products, and the implementation of cooperation projects,” the Belarusian Foreign Ministry reports.
On the same day, Hlaz met with Abdul Amir al-Shammari, head of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces.
“The interlocutors discussed regional security issues, the situation in Iraq, and promising areas of Belarusian-Iraqi cooperation, including the exchange of experience and expanding contacts between the relevant agencies of the two countries,” the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
On September 2, Hlaz met with Faiq Zidan, Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq.
The talks focused on prospects for further developing cooperation between the relevant institutions of the two countries, the implementation of agreements reached following Zidan’s visit to Minsk, as well as certain humanitarian issues.
On September 3, Hlaz met with Iraqi Minister of Electricity Ali Saadi Wahib. The Belarusian side offered Iraq assistance in modernizing the country’s electricity system and supplying the relevant components.
Together with the management of Belarusian pharmaceutical companies, Anatol Hlaz also took part in a business forum organized by the Belarusian Embassy and a series of substantive meetings with representatives of Iraqi business circles.
“The participants discussed practical areas of cooperation in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, industry and energy, as well as the supply of Belarusian machinery,” the Foreign Ministry reports.
