Attempt to Smuggle Antique Banknotes From Belarus to Poland Thwarted

The driver of a Fiat car attempted to secretly take 28 antique banknotes out of Belarus without declaring them to customs.

The driver was leaving for Poland through the Berastavitsa border checkpoint. He chose the red channel and submitted a passenger customs declaration to complete the temporary import procedure for the vehicle. The man told customs officers that he had nothing else to declare.

During an inspection of his personal belongings, customs officers discovered the antique banknotes. An expert examination established that the banknotes had been produced more than 100 years ago and are classified as cultural property, the State Customs Committee said.

Administrative proceedings have been initiated against the man.
