Details have emerged about how the ashes of Belarusian writer Sviatlana Kurs (Eva Vezhnavets) were brought from Poland to her homeland. As reported by Belsat, her relatives handled the matter without the involvement of Belarusian diplomats.
The writer’s family tried to contact the Belarusian embassy but without success — as a result, they had to organize the entire process themselves. To do so, the relatives contacted the Bureau for the Care of Foreign Graves (Bongo), which took responsibility for processing the documents and arranging the logistics.
The transportation had its own peculiarities.
The urn containing the ashes was transported in the same vehicle as the bodies of other deceased people (coffins were also in the vehicle).
Bongo said that coffins usually attract significantly more attention from border guards and require strict formalities, so transporting the urn was easier.
The company’s employees accompanied the ashes across the border and delivered them directly to the village.
The burial took place on August 22 in the village of Bayanichy, Lyuban District, where Sviatlana Kurs was born.
Only the closest relatives attended the ceremony. The authorities were categorically opposed to giving the event public status. In accordance with the writer’s last wishes, her body was cremated — a public farewell to the urn had taken place earlier in Warsaw.
To cover the costs of organizing the farewell and transporting the ashes, the family was forced to take out a loan. The BYSOL Foundation launched a fundraiser to repay the amount (€6,000) — Belarusians raised the necessary funds in just half a day.
Sviatlana Kurs died on July 19, 2026, in Warsaw after a long battle with cancer, which she publicly disclosed in spring 2025.
