Public cultural and educational activities by artist Siarhei Filipau have been banned in Minsk. He is no longer able to hold creative gatherings and lectures in the capital.
Over the past year, Filipau curated an educational project that hosted around 20 events at six different venues, including the A. S. Pushkin Minsk Regional Library. The creative gatherings featured prominent Belarusian cultural figures and local historians.
Siarhei Filipau is a Belarusian writer, artist and cultural figure. He is the author of books and publications about the history of Minsk, urban life and informal subcultures of the 1970s and 1980s. He is also known as one of the pioneers of the advertising industry in Belarus.
Censorship and bans on appearances by independent cultural figures remain among the tools used to exert pressure on Belarus’s cultural sphere.
