Almost 2,500 Photos Of Belarusian Villages Uploaded As Part Of Wiki Loves Villages Photo Contest

Belarus became the pilot country for Wikimedia’s Wiki Loves Villages photo contest, which aimed to collect high-quality images of rural settlements that remain without illustrations on Wikipedia. A total of 2,445 photographs from Belarusian villages can now be viewed on Wikimedia Commons.

The new photo contest was intended to fill the largest gap in illustrations: the lack of photographs of rural areas. The upload campaign ran from Aug. 15 to 31. To participate, users had to take photographs of villages in Belarus and upload them according to lists of settlements.

Volunteers and ordinary users who visited relatives or traveled during the summer uploaded almost 2,500 images to the Wikimedia Commons repository. These media files now help illustrate numerous language versions of Wikipedia.
