Politician, former Belarusian presidential candidate and scholar Aliaksandr Milinkievich has died. His family announced his death, Belsat reports.
In November last year, Milinkievich underwent complex surgery on his carotid artery. He remained in serious condition for a long time afterward and underwent rehabilitation.
Aliaksandr Milinkievich was born in Hrodna in 1947. He graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Hrodna Pedagogical Institute and later completed postgraduate studies at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR, earning a PhD in physics and mathematics. Milinkievich worked as an associate professor at the Faculty of Physics of Hrodna State University and also taught at universities abroad. From 1990 to 1996, he served as deputy chairman of the Hrodna City Executive Committee. He was a presidential candidate in the 2006 presidential election. He later headed the “For Freedom” movement.
