Teenager from Kalinkavichy Dies in Drunk-Driving Crash; Police Had Previously Chased Him

The Investigative Committee is investigating a fatal traffic accident in the Naroulia district.

According to the committee, the events began on October 25, when two friends, aged 18 and 16, from Naroulia College took a bus to Kalinkavichy, where they met a local 17-year-old. They spent several hours drinking alcohol before calling a taxi to Naroulia. Upon arrival, the young men failed to pay the driver and ran away.

They then decided to drive around the district. One of them suggested taking a car belonging to a relative. The group entered a property where a Daewoo Nubira was parked with the keys inside.

The 17-year-old from Kalinkavichy got behind the wheel. At around 2 a.m., on the Naroulia–Konotop road, he lost control of the vehicle. The car veered onto the roadside and overturned. The driver sustained injuries and died in hospital. His passengers suffered minor injuries.

During the investigation, officers established that on August 20 this year, the deceased had also been intoxicated when he tried to flee from traffic police pursuing him. He did not have a driver’s license.
