Two Belarusian citizens, aged 39 and 50, have been arrested in Bavaria on suspicion of planning sabotage targeting railway and energy infrastructure in the Nuremberg area. Investigators believe they planned to carry out arson attacks near a railway line and a power transmission line, WELT reports, citing security sources.

According to the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office, the men are suspected of planning, on behalf of a foreign state or organization, to use incendiary devices to set fire to a building or critical infrastructure facility. The aim was to cause significant material damage and threaten Germany’s security. They are believed to have been promised payment for carrying out the assignment.

“These actions are classified as conspiracy to commit arson in conjunction with agent activity for the purpose of sabotage,” the authority said.

According to the publication, both suspects have been in custody since October 7 under a warrant issued by a court in the city of Fürth.

The men are also under investigation in Romania in connection with a suspected sabotage plot. Romanian law enforcement authorities believe they may have been involved in setting fire to an industrial facility in the city of Brașov on the night of September 14.

On Monday, Romania’s intelligence service announced that it had uncovered a sabotage network that, according to the agency, operated under Russian direction and was involved in a fire at an industrial site near a facility linked to the defense industry.

Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism is seeking the extradition of the two Belarusians detained in Germany and a Ukrainian citizen held in custody in Poland.
