It could be signed in the near future. Energy Minister Dzianis Maroz made the announcement.
“Last year, a decision was made to further develop nuclear energy in our country. The issue of building a third 1,200 MW unit at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant is now being studied in depth. At the same time, work is underway on the construction of another nuclear power plant. In accordance with instructions from the head of state and the government, we are working closely with Rosatom. The state corporation has expressed interest in constructing the third unit of BelNPP. To this end, a general framework agreement needs to be prepared. This document is now at an advanced stage of readiness. I am confident that we will announce its signing in the near future,” BELTA quoted him as saying.
Earlier, the Energy Ministry and Rosatom said the agreement should be signed by the end of this year. It is subsequently to be supplemented by other documents, including a contract, a government action plan and other materials.
Last December, Moroz said the third unit could come online in the middle of the next decade. By that time, Belarus’s power grid would be ready to integrate it. According to him, the third unit was planned to be commissioned between 2035 and 2038.
