Lithuania will propose sanctions on the transit of Russian grain through European Union countries. The country’s Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said this.

He noted that Russia is intensifying strikes on Ukrainian territory. One of the targets has been Ukrainian ports used to export grain.

“Grain is also being massively stolen from the occupied territories of Ukraine and sold on global markets. At the same time, Russia uses European ports and infrastructure, including in the Baltic states, to export its grain. This is an unacceptable situation that has so far been tolerated under the pretext that EU sanctions do not apply to food products,” he wrote.

According to Sinkevičius, the Baltic states are trying to stop this transit. He raised the issue in talks with his Latvian counterpart. The two countries have the same position.

“Decisions are also needed at the EU level. Lithuania will propose not only banning such transit, but also adding individual Russian agricultural oligarchs who support the war to the sanctions list,” he added.

According to him, Lithuanian institutions have already been instructed to verify the origin of the grain, while law enforcement agencies are analyzing the links of exporting companies to determine whether they cooperate with sanctioned individuals.

“Companies operating strategic infrastructure are also assessing whether such cooperation poses a threat to national security.

We will not allow the Russian war machine to profit by using our infrastructure as a gateway to global markets,” the Lithuanian prime minister said.
