Latvia has extended Operation Vilkatis (“Werewolf”), aimed at combating illegal migration on the Belarus border, until December 31 this year. The decision was made by the Latvian government on October 6.

“Given that repairs to border infrastructure damaged by the storm on August 22-23 are still underway, as is the strengthening of the State Border Guard’s capabilities, including through expanded use of unmanned aerial vehicles, the government decided to extend the security operation. This means that security controls on the Latvia-Belarus border will continue to be strengthened to prevent illegal migration,” the Latvian Border Guard reports.

Since the operation began, Latvian border guards have stopped more than 1,400 people attempting to cross the border illegally. Several migrant smugglers have also been detained. Two tunnels leading from the Belarusian side were discovered and dismantled.

The operation was launched on August 11 and was initially scheduled to end in September, but was extended until October.
