Minsk is considering a meeting between Aliaksandr Lukashenka and U.S. President Donald Trump and is taking steps to arrange it. Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhankou said this in an interview with RIA Novosti on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“We are indeed considering a meeting between the presidents from a practical standpoint, and appropriate steps are being taken to make it happen,” he said.

He noted that Trump had previously invited Lukashenka to take part in the Board of Peace in the United States. However, according to Ryzhankou, the trip did not take place “due to technical difficulties.”

“But, you know, a number of technical issues simply prevented us from doing so. And it was not because of the American side, but because it is currently quite difficult to fly from Belarus to the United States, given the sanctions that the European Union has imposed personally on the president and on flights by our aircraft,” he explained.

Ryzhankou also said that Minsk maintains contacts with European countries.

“Overall, interest in Belarus is awakening, and this concerns individual key EU countries,” he claimed.

“We do not publicize all of this very much, but we do have contacts. Again, we are not approaching them with an outstretched hand, nor are we doing it at any price. Today, we are building our foreign policy around the countries with which we are able to develop excellent relations: all of the vast Eurasia that lies behind us through Russia, Africa, and Latin America. And cooperation is progressing quite successfully,” the diplomat added.
