Belarusian Cigarettes Found In Ore Wagon At Latvian Border

Latvian customs officers discovered 100,000 cigarettes bearing Belarusian excise stamps in a freight train at the border with Belarus. The cigarettes were hidden under a layer of ore, the Latvian State Revenue Service reports.

On September 20, 2026, during a customs inspection of the train at the Indra customs post, customs officers found boxes in one of the ore wagons. The boxes contained 100,000 NZ Gold cigarettes bearing Belarusian excise stamps.

According to the agency, the amount of unpaid taxes on the cigarettes exceeds €29,900.

The materials were handed over to Latvia’s Tax and Customs Police to decide whether to initiate criminal proceedings.
