Man Detained In Warsaw Over Attack On Belarusian Woman

A 69-year-old Warsaw resident has been detained in connection with an attack on Belarusian national Maryna Nikandryna. Radio Svaboda reports this, citing Piotr Skiba, a spokesman for the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office.

The incident occurred on May 30 near the Rondo ONZ metro station. An unidentified man rudely ordered Nikandryna to move out of his way and, after hearing her accent, began insulting her and telling her to go to Ukraine. When the woman said she was a Belarusian citizen, the man told her to return to her homeland and continued insulting her. The Belarusian woman recorded the incident on video. She also said that the man struck her. The recording was later handed over to the police. The prosecutor’s office launched an investigation on July 31.

According to Skiba, the 69-year-old man was brought to the prosecutor’s office and questioned. He was charged under several articles of the Polish Criminal Code, including public insult, violation of bodily integrity, and violence or unlawful threats motivated by national origin.

The man did not fully admit to the charges against him. He denies striking the victim or threatening to kill her. He also said that he has no prejudice against people of other nationalities and that, in his view, the victim wanted publicity.

The man will remain under police supervision. He is prohibited from approaching or contacting the victim.
