Potash Companies’ Shares Fall After Trump Says U.S. Is Working On Deal With Belarus

At the end of trading, shares of Canada’s Nutrien fell 3.31% to $74.54, although immediately after Trump’s statement, the stock dropped as low as $73.06 per share.
Mosaic shares fell 1.67% to $24.07 per share at the close. During the trading session, their price dropped as low as $23.21 per share.
Intrepid Potash shares fell 1.55% to $36.92 per share. The lowest price yesterday was $35.65.
CF Industries shares fell 3.47% to $123.27 per share, with the day’s low at $122.21.
As reported earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said yesterday that work was underway on a major deal to purchase potash from Belarus. He said the price would be significantly lower than what the United States currently pays Canada.
It should be noted that according to Chinese customs statistics, Belarusian potassium chloride was imported into China at an average price of $337.50 per tonne in August this year, while Canadian potassium chloride was imported at $348.60 per tonne. At the same time, over the first eight months of the year, the average price per tonne of Belarusian product in the statistics was $349.70, compared with $352.50 for Canadian product.
Belarus has not disclosed data on potash fertilizer exports since 2021, while detailed country-by-country export data were not published before 2016.
Belstat data indicate that in 2017-2018, Belarus supplied around 400,000 tonnes of potash fertilizers annually to the United States, measured in terms of active substance (K₂O), earning $130 million in 2017 and $160 million in 2018. In 2019-2020, supplies amounted to around 330,000 tonnes annually, measured in terms of active substance. In value terms, exports to the United States amounted to nearly $127 million in 2019 and nearly $101 million in 2020.
